Netflix’s FYSEE LA: Rebels & Rule Breakers With Creators Mara Brock Akil, Debora Cahn, Lesli Linka Glatter, Katie Walsh and Tracey Wigfield

You might think there's not that much similarity between a doc about an athlete and a drama series about an internet catastrophe — but that's only if you haven't seen the directors of those projects, Katie Walsh and Lesli Linka Glatter, bond over their shared challenges. Walsh, director of Simone Biles Rising, and Glatter, director of the political thriller Zero Day, were among the five top creators who joined The Ankler’s awards editor Katey Rich for a wide-ranging conversation on May 17 — part of Netflix’s FYSEE LA. Mara Brock Akil reflected on why she reinvented Judy Blume’s iconic novel Forever to center Black teens; Tracey Wigfield revealed why she and Tina Fey were drawn to transform The Four Seasons, a 1970s movie, into a contemporary comedy-drama; and The Diplomat creator Debora Cahn explained that, as wide-ranging as her projects have been, she's really telling the same story in all of them: about a woman at the center of global events — in this case, the U.S. Ambassador to the U.K. — who’s also just trying to get through the day. The Diplomat, Forever, Simone Biles Rising, The Four Seasons and Zero Day are now streaming on Netflix.
